GRIEF and LOSS

Loss occurs whenever life is different than we want it to be.  It is a state of being deprived of, or being without someone or something we had or valued.  Like a physical injury, loss can cause a lot of pain, alter how one functions for a while, and in time loss can heal. Like injuries, if you ignore a loss, deny it is there, or attempt to function as if you are not injured - greater pain or injury may result in the end.   A sense of loss may result from many things such as:

•

Death of a loved one

•

Broken relationships

•

“Coming Out”

•

Employment changes or loss

•

Friends moving

•

Sudden health changes

GRIEF is the internal, emotional response to loss.  Some common experiences of grief include:

•

A sense of shock or disbelief

•

Difficulty concentrating

•

Feeling overwhelmed by questions and doubts

•

Sorrow, frustration, anger, guilt, helplessness, hopelessness, depression, and isolation

•

Physical pain like aching heart, knots in the stomach, lump in the throat

•

Difficulty eating or sleeping

Grieving is what we call the process of feeling our pain and experiencing a loss on an emotional level.  When we grieve, we are honoring a loss - whether that loss is through death, divorce, separation, change, or other unexpected event.  Basically,
loss occurs any time something is different than we had hoped it would be.

Whatever the loss, it is important to give yourself the time and attention you need to honor the loss, accept the loss and redefine yourself and your situation in the face of the loss.
